The Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) hosted an open seminar on the first day of the Vertikal Days exhibition which was attended by CPA members and others with a keen interest in updates on plant, lifting and MEWPs operational, technical and training issues.
Following a welcome from CPA Chief Executive Kevin Minton, CPA Legal Manager David Smith started the proceedings with a presentation on GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation). David outlined the implications on the plant hire sector and the availability of further advice on the CPA website at https://www.cpa.uk.net/legal-introduction/
The second speaker was CPA Technical Consultant Tim Watson who gave an overview of the voluntary roadworthiness scheme for mobile cranes on bespoke chassis. Tim outlined the removal of the MOT exemption for some types of mobile cranes and spoke about the amended regulations which came into force on 20th May this year. The voluntary scheme mirrors the HGV MOT scheme and requires annual roadworthiness inspections. Further information is available for free from the CPA website at https://www.cpa.uk.net/crane-interest-group-publications-guidance/
CPA Chief Executive Kevin Minton then gave an overview of the Greater London Authority (GLA) control of emissions and an update on the potential removal of exemption for mobile cranes before CPA Technical Manager Peter Brown outlined the availability of the new Lifting Technician Trailblazer Apprenticeship. This has been devised by an employer-led Trailblazer working group and is now ready for delivery. Designed for those who will operate a Mobile Crane, Crawler Crane or Tower Crane and undertake slinging and signalling duties, the new Lifting Technician Trailblazer Apprenticeship replaces the existing Construction Civil Engineering Plant Operator (Cranes Lifting) Framework Apprenticeship which will be phased out. The seminar concluded with a presentation by Tim Watson on forthcoming updates to several parts of BS 7121: Code of Practice for the Safe Use of Cranes.
CPA Chief Executive Kevin Minton said: “It was heartening to see so many of our members attend the seminar during a busy Vertikal Days show. The seminar provoked a great deal of interesting debate about the current issues affecting our industry and we would like to thank all those who attended.”
